There are lots of amazing things currently happening in and around my life which has seen me take the liberty of over-using the word ‘excited’. With all the excitement going on I got to thinking about all the different levels of ‘excitement’ we experience at different stages of our lives and wondering; Is the thrill we feel at five years of age, when we execute our first cart-wheel any less than the teenager who passes their driving test first time round, or the 50 year old who manages to run her first 10km charity race? Personally, I don’t think so – it’s all relative. But that’s just me. Sitting at my favourite cafe I started thinking about what it is it to be excited and what we get excited about? This lead me to check the online definition of ‘excite’, where I discovered what the Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary had to say:
Definition of EXCITE
transitive verb
1. a : to call to activity
1. b : to rouse to an emotional response <scenes to excite the hardest man to pity>
1. c : to arouse (as a strong emotional response) by appropriate stimuli <excite enthusiasm for the new regime — Arthur Knight>
2. a : energize <excite an electromagnet>
b : to produce a magnetic field in <excite a dynamo>
3 : to increase the activity of (as a living organism) : stimulate
4 : to raise (as an atomic nucleus, an atom, or a molecule) to a higher energy level
The paradox is nothing in the definition excited me. Continued reading revealed; “First known use of EXCITEMENT was in 1604.” Seriously? What did they call it before 1604? Did they just not get ‘excited’? Did they not desire to raise energy to a higher level? Well, regardless what my ancestors named their strong responses to arousal I am feeling pretty damn stimulated about the current state of affairs.
Some of my friends would say I get excited at the simplest things in life, which I don’t think is such a bad thing. Lately I feel there is plenty to get excited about, the obvious being the Platform of Women blog going live; then there is the imminent Platform of Women Launch, the announcement by, not one, but two girlfriends they are pregnant, seeing my dear friend get excited about her new blog, that first sip of a good coffee in the morning, and my niece who is about to start her dream job, just to name a few.
Everyone seems to get excited about certain things at different stages of their lives, so I jotted down some things that have excited me in the last ten years:
- Moving to Melbourne
- Finding my home in Melbourne
- Finding my first job in Melbourne
- Directing my first play in Melbourne
- Directing my first short film in Melbourne
- Making my first BFF in Melbourne
- Riding the tram for the first time (not in peak hour)
- Seeing Royal Parade in autumn for the first time
- Buying my first car in Melbourne
- Discovering I’m only an hour and a half from the snow
- Visiting Bells Beach
- Saturn and Venice coming into my life
I decided to ask an expert about getting excited – so I asked my friend’s five year old; “what do you get excited about?” He puffed out his little chest and proudly told me he was excited that he had made his ‘big boy bed’ all on his own AND they were going to his favourite take-away food outlet for lunch. Bless his little cotton socks. I can’t remember the last time I got excited about making my big girl bed.
So, as I continue to get excited about the pending Launch of Platform of Women – you can still get tickets by clicking HERE – and seeing my friend get excited about her blog I simply want to ask you all – “What makes you as excited as a five year old?”
